The largest island in the Ligurian Sea, Palmaria is part of the Porto Venere archipelago, which is included in the Cinque Terre UNESCO World Heritage site, along with the islands of Tino and Tinetto.
The island has a double nature: on the Porto Venere side, it slopes gradually down the sea, providing much appreciated beaches and a wealth of Mediterranean vegetation, while on the side that faces the open sea, the rocky coastline rises in cliffs above numerous caves which are mostly accessible by boat. Historically considered an impenetrable fortress, the island has a host of heritage buildings, including Forte Umberto I and the Forte Cavour, constructed in the late 1800s as part of the Batteria Semaforo defence system for the island and the surrounding territory.
