The cathedral complex of Cimitile is one of the most interesting examples of Early Christian art in Europe. Once a pagan necropolis dating to the 3rd century B.C.E., the complex became a Christian sanctuary with the establishment of the tomb of St. Felice, who managed the local church following its bishop’s death without taking on the role. The complex today includes seven churches and is an important pilgrimage site.
