The Park of Virgil, located in Naples near the Church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta and the Mergellina train station, owes its name to the Roman sepulchre found here, attributed to the poet Publius Vergilius Maro, better known as Virgil. The park houses monuments and buildings of historical significance, including the tomb of poet Giacomo Leopardi, and the eastern entrance to the Crypta Neapolitana, one of the oldest tunnels in the world, built during the reign of Emperor Augustus to facilitate the connection between Naples and the Phlegraean Fields.
