Legend holds that Hercules, hero of Greek Mythology, founded the ancient Greek settlement of Herculaneum (NA) on the shore of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was then conquered by the Samnites before the Romans later colonized the area. Excavation work in this ancient site has recovered a host of historical information and artistic treasures. The thick layer of mud that covered the city due to the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D., provided an almost perfect state of conservation for precious artefacts such as the glass paste mosaic of Neptune and Amphitrite as a married couple.
A large part of the visible archaeological area is occupied by the thermal baths, the palestra and, most of all, by private residences of all types dating to the imperial era: houses with a traditional floor plan, houses for multi-family occupancy, large residences that developed across entire neighbourhoods with a position overlooking the sea and between the walls.
