The historical centre of Cosenza and the original founding settlement of the city, also known as Cosenza Vecchia, stretches across hills between the rivers Crati and Busento, beneath the imposing Norman Swabian Castle.
The historical residential centre has a labyrinth of streets with a concentration of noble palaces, churches, convents, fortresses, squares and open areas. Corso Telesio, a principal thoroughfare, is interrupted by the circular piazza del Duomo, which is articulated in staircases. Piazza XV Marzo, a statue of philosopher Bernardino Telesio at its centre, features the teatro comunale Alfonso Rendano, palazzo del Governo and the historic park of Villa Vecchia. Places of interest include the national library and Palazzo Arnone, once a courthouse and prison, now the setting for a national gallery.
