The Palazzo del Governo in Cosenza, built in neo-classical style between 1844 and 1847 stands in piazza XV Marzo and is the seat of the Provincial government. It was built on the foundations of the Monastery of St. Mary of Constantinople, whose underground crypt is still conserved.
The exterior has two orders with different materials: the ground floor is covered with rusticated stone beneath a plastered upper part. The slightly protruding entrance portal supports a balcony typical of noble 16th century buildings.
Inside, the sala consiliare is covered with frescoes by brothers Enrico and Federico Andreotti featuring historical and allegorical characters, painted in approx. 1879 to celebrate the visit of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita. The sala IV has frescoes of Dante, Machiavelli, King Frederick II of Swabia and King Roger I of Sicily; four medallions are dedicated to notables from Cosenza who have excelled in their sphere of influence: Bernardino Telesio (philosophy), Antonio Serra (economics), Gian Vincenzo Gravina (literature), Gaetano Argento (law). The inner courtyard features a bust of King Victor Emanuel II.
