The Municipal Library is located in a historic building in the centre of Imola (BO) which dates to the Middle Ages when it was a Franciscan convent. The municipal administration began restructuring the former convent and with it reorganising the library services in the 1990s. Rooms on the ground floor have retained 18th century architectural characteristics with the addition of glass cabinets and shelving for 17,000+ volumes, 5,000 CDs and 3,000 films organised by genre.
The same floor also houses a sottoportico from the 1930s, now closed in with glass walls and an inner courtyard with a Himalayan cedar that is 100+ years old. The aula magna, built in approximately 1760, was designed by Cosimo Morelli who created a large square room with a wooden balustrade that separated areas of shelving, two spiral staircases and the paper and decorations on the walls and ceiling. The room today conserves approximately 14,000 books.
The main reading room holds approximately 5,000 books and is annexed to the Archive and Rare book room reserved for the consultation of valuable documents.
