The former gasometro (gasholder) of Broletto dates to 1900 and was the first store to provide a guaranteed supply of gas for the residential, commercial and industrial buildings of Trieste.
The water-sealed gas holder has a circular structure and is built of stone and iron. With a 45m diameter and 35 m height, it could hold 20,000 cubic metres of gas.
The roof has a cupola whose interior is lined with wood and an exterior studded with numerous little windows at regular intervals and a lantern with a walkway on the top. There are 14 large glass openings on the façade in the metal structure and a pressure gauge in stone.
The Broletto gasholder was not demolished like similar structures but is protected as a building of cultural interest and its external structure has been preserved.
