The Panzano workers village in Monfalcone (GO) was built in 1908 to the model of the so-called “company towns” and its growth alongside the Cantiere Navale Triestino was fostered during the 1920s by the owners, the Cosulich brothers.
The streets are lined with buildings designed by engineer Dante Fornasir, starting from the former office workers hotel, an original building in jugendstil, built to provide housing for unmarried workers in the shipyards. The 2007-09 restoration work conserved the original colours of the decorations beneath the overhang, the central staircase and the hall of columns.
Further along are the villas for office workers and managers, positioned in an area distant to the centre of the neighbourhood and differentiated from workers’ housing by the eclectic style and lively colours of the decoration.
The heart of the workers village is situated after viale Cosulich, and what remains of the tracks that linked the shipyard to the station of Ronchi Sud. Here are the buildings dedicated to corporate welfare such as the stadium, the shopping and socialising areas of the neighbourhood.
At the end is the former factory workers hotel, today housing MuCa – Museo della Cantieristica di Monfalcone, which tells the story of the yard and the city from its position alongside the shipyards where still cruise ships are built today.
