The Porto Vecchio covers 66 hectares of Trieste shoreline, between the mouth of the Ponte Rosso canal and the area of Barcola, with a range of large buildings, originally used as storehouses or warehouses. The oldest buildings in the harbour are the warehouses, built on the lagerhäuser model, a word denominating the areas of a city used for cargo transport and storage from arrival to distribution or dispatchment.
The architectural style of these enormous buildings features vertical and horizontal lines on the façade and various materials which decorators and sculptors have worked to provide a range of decorative elements. Cornicing, modillions, capitals, basements, ledges produce a chromatically uniform effect thanks to the use of natural colours. The cement columns are a distinctive element of the ground floors.
