The Fortezza dei Papi (Fortress of the Popes) in Montefiascone (VT) is an imposing fortification built on the summit of Colle Falisco by Pope Innocence III (1198-1216) to defend the city and transformed by Pope Urban V (1362-70) into an abode for the papal court. Consequently, it became known as Rocca dei Papi as it was used by many of his successors, either as a primary or vacation residence, until the time of Pope Paul III (1534-49). Two plagues and an earthquake lead to its deterioration. The fortress was abandoned and used as a quarry for building materials until several years ago when a comprehensive restoration project brought the ruins of the old castle to light.
The ground floor now houses the Museo dell’Architettura di Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane, dedicated to the great Renaissance architect who restored the Rocca and was very active in the Tuscia area.
