The Malaspina Castle of Massa is a medieval fortress that dominates the town of Massa from a rocky hill set on the the slopes of the Apuan Alps. After being transformed into a prison at the end of the 19th century, the architectural complex is currently divided into three parts: the bastion town walls, the central keep and the residential palace. It has two large inner courtyards, with marble coats of arms and a frescoed vault dating back to the 15th century.
