Piazza Dante is located in the historical centre of Naples, connecting via Toledo with the Port’Alba area. The present semi-circular layout was designed by Luigi Vanvitelli to celebrate Charles III in the second half of the 1700s. The 26 statues of the Carolingian Forum represent the king’s virtues, the Convitto Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele II, previously the convent of St. Sebastian, can be accessed from the hemicycle.
Four churches stand on the square– Santa Maria di Caravaggio, San Domenico Soriano, San Michele a Port'Alba, the Church dell’Immacolata degli Operatori Sanitari – as does Palazzo Ruffo di Bagnara, an example of Neapolitan Baroque. To the left is Port’Alba. In 2002, piazza Dante was partially adapted to make space for Metro Line 1.
