The Story of A Lost Child, which closes the My Brilliant Friend tetralogy based on Elena Ferrante’s novels, takes place in a time frame that ranges from the 1980s to the early 2000s. The HBO-Rai Fiction series has new faces for the two protagonists: Alba Rohrwacher as Elena and Irene Maiorino as Lila, while Fabrizio Gifuni is Nino Sarratore as an adult. Lina (or Lila) and Elena (or Lenù) are now adults, their lives full of events, discoveries, falls and "rebirths" behind them. Both have fought to leave their hometown, a prison of conformism, violence and bonds that are difficult to break. Now an established writer, Elena left Naples, got married and then separated, had two daughters. She returns to Naples to pursue a youthful love that has reappeared in her new life. Lila has stayed in Naples, entangled in family and Camorra relationships, but also has invented a surprising new career as an IT entrepreneur; more than ever, she reveals her fascinating and charismatic role as the real, but secret, head of the neighbourhood (which causes clashes with the powerful Solara brothers). Through the trials that life has given them, the friends continually discover new aspects of their personalities and of their friendship in themselves and each other. Meanwhile, the history of Italy and the world unfolds in the background and the two women and their friendship must tackle this too.
Naples is again the central location: Posillipo, via Petrarca, and recurring places in the city's historic centre such as piazza del Plebiscito, piazza Mercato, lungomare Francesco Caracciolo, piazza Dante, largo San Marcellino, in the heart of the Decumani, with the Unviersità Federico II University campus.
Naturally, rione Luzzatti, a key setting in the previous seasons, also features. The director notes: "The Rione becomes colourful in the 80s. And yet, the feeling you have, looking at it, is that it has always been that way. Its evolution is very natural and everything is linked to the past. I combined my fluid style of constant symbiosis with the characters, a certain freedom of movement and very long takes (which is how I love to shoot), with moments of suspension and minimalist storytelling to underline different atmospheres".
Additional locations included: Caserta, in a stretch of corso Trieste that includes piazza Dante and the areas around the Reggia; Turin and Florence.

The two "brilliant" friends – Elena and Lila – are now adults. An established writer, Elena has married, had two daughters, separated and returned to Naples, attracted by a love from her youth. Lila, on the other hand, has stayed anchored to her city, immersed in the complex family ties and dark plots of the Camorra, but capable of reinventing herself as an IT entrepreneur.
