Taking its name from the church, Piazza San Domenico Maggiore is at the crossroads of two important thoroughfares in the historical centre of Naples: Spaccanapoli, which links the piazza to the nearby piazza del Gesù Nuovo, and via Mezzocannone. The church’s apse, its upper part enclosed in a cornice of merlons, emerges behind the Obelisk of San Domenico, by Francesco Antonio Picchiatti, a votive offering from Neapolitans who survived the plague of 1656.
The square was commissioned by Alfonso I of Naples who was also responsible for the grand staircase to the side of the apse of the Church of San Domenico Maggiore. Other buildings on the square include: Palazzo Petrucci, Palazzo Saluzzo di Corigliano, now the Università L’Orientale, Palazzo di Sangro di Casacalenda, Church of Sant'Angelo a Nilo also known as Cappella Brancaccio, Palazzo Carafa della Spina and Palazzo di Sangro.
