Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, in the historical centre of Naples, is linked to piazza San Domenico Maggiore by the famous street known as Spaccanapoli. The square takes its name from the Church del Gesù Nuovo, built on the former Palazzo Sanseverino, a significant example of Neapolitan Baroque whose 15th century rustic ashlar façade with diamond projections in volcanic tuff is engraved with 10cm high Aramaic characters linked to musical notes.
Also located on the square are the Monastery of St. Clare, the largest Gothic church in the city, and several late Baroque noble palaces, such as Palazzo Pandola and Palazzo Pignatelli di Monteleone. In the centre of the square is the monumental Obelisk of the Immaculate Virgin, a majestic spire in white and dark bardiglio marble.
