Named for the 21 October 1860 Plebiscite which determined the annexation of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies to the Kingdom of Italy, Piazza del Plebiscito is the most elegant and solemn of Naples’ monumental squares. Located in the historical centre between the seafront and via Toledo, it covers a surface area of 25,000 sqm. One side of the square is bounded by the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, a significant example of Neoclassical architecture in Italy, with semi-circular colonnade. Completing the decoration of this side of the square are the equestrian statues of Charles III (by Antonio Canova) and his son Ferdinand I (begun by Canova and completed by Antonio Calì) positioned on the horizontal axis that joins both ends of the colonnade.
On the rectangular-shaped opposite site is Royal Palace with a 169m long façade of pink terracotta bricks, piperno and volcanic stone from the Phlegraean Fields, completed in 1616. Two sides of the square are closed by symmetrical, identical buildings, the present-day Palazzo della Prefettura and Palazzo Salerno.
