King Charles III founded the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples in 1737, many years before the construction of Milan’s Teatro della Scala or Venice’s Teatro Fenice. The San Carlo Orchestra was established the same year while the School of Dance, Italy’s oldest, was founded at the Theatre in 1812.
Designed by Giovanni Antonio Medrano, the theatre was built next to north-facing side of the Royal Palace, adjacent to piazza del Plebiscito. The Palace was directly connected to the Royal box which allowed the king to arrive at the theatre without having to use the streets.
Today the theatre can accommodate 1,386 spectators, with a vast stalls area, five rows of boxes arranged in a horseshoe, a large Royal box, loggia and stage. It is predominantly red and gold.
The long and important history of the Theatre makes it one of the most prestigious in the world today, offering a prestigious annual programme of Opera, ballet and classical music.
