Founded in 1224 by Emperor Frederick II, the Università degli Studi di Napoli “Federico II” is one of the oldest in the world. The Neo-Baroque building housing the central department in corso Umberto I, was constructed between 1897 and 1908, designed by Pierpaolo Quaglia and Guglielmo Melisurgo to accommodate a rising student population. The design included the construction of three buildings, joined together, for the Rectorate, the Faculty of Literature and Law and Institutes of Chemistry and Physics. The imposing scalone della Minerva would connect the new building with the original university complex at the Casa del Salvatore behind.
The architectural complex of Casa del Salvatore is a former Jesuit seminary with wings extending around two courtyards: the cloister del Salvatore and the monumental cloister (also known as the courtyard of the statues) which can be accessed from corso Umberto.
