Formerly the seat of government for the ancient Republic, the Ducal Palace of Genoa is one of the main historical buildings and museums in the administrative centre of the Liguria region. The palace has been completely restored.
The most imposing room in the building, the salone del Maggior Consiglio (dimensions: 37m long, 16m wide) occupies the entire central body along with the adjacent salone del Minor Consiglio (dimensions: 20m long, 13m wide). The salone is decorated in Neoclassical style, characterised by a range of coloured marbles and fake marbles in stucco lustro.
The Doges Chapel in Genovese Baroque style is a striking, sumptuous space whose entire surface, ceiling and walls, are frescoed with scenes celebrating the glory and illustrious personages of the marine Republic. Christopher Columbus is depicted planting a cross in the New World in the centre of the entrance wall.
The upper floors of the Grimaldina Tower and adjacent rooms were used as prisons from the time of the Republic to WWII.
