Palazzo Bianco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in via Garibaldi, in the historical centre of Genoa. The palace was built between 1530 and 1540 for Luca Grimaldi, member of a prestigious local family. The simple original building was restructured and embellished with external decorations in plasterwork, wall cornicing and ornamentation in the drawing rooms from the 1700s.
Palazzo Bianco was the centre point for the gathering of numerous artworks between the 1700s and 1800s, and, with the establishment of a gallery open to the public, played a key role in establishing the city’s civic museums.
Today its galleries include sections on: Italian art; Flemish and Spanish art; and Ligurian and Genovese painters from 16th to 18th century with works by Filippino Lippi, Giorgio Vasari, Paolo Caliari (Veronese), Luca Cambiaso, Hans Memling, Gerard David, Jan Matsys, Pieter Paul Rubens and Anton Van Dyck.
