Rocca di Nepi, also known as Borgia Castle, is a fortress on the edge of the historical residential centre of Nepi (province of Viterbo) and part of the town fortifications.
The castle was built in 1450 on the ruins of previous fortresses and expanded in 1476 by Rodrigo de Borja. Transformed by the Farnese family to a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, its four corner towers and two cylindrical towers are intact today.
The original structure is clear to see: the castle has a polygonal layout with cylindrical towers at the four corners, plus another on the south-east and a smaller tower on the north eastern side facing the town. The perimeter was connected by a walkway.
Some parts of the structure are still clearly distinguishable: the inner courtyard, the imposing keep and the “Bastioni Farnesiani”; the remains of the kitchens, service areas, castellan’s quarters and reception room are on the ground floor while the guest rooms are on the second floor.
