Lake Posta Fibreno (province of Frosinone), also known as lake della Posta, is located in the Comino valley at the intersection between Lazio, Abruzzo and Molise.
Positioned on the southwestern slope of the Marsica range, the lake is formed by foothill streams coming from the high Sangro valley in Abruzzo which are transported below ground by Karst phenomena and rise up at Posta Fibreno.
The lake has a narrow, elongated shape, similar to a boomerang, with transparent water and pristine natural surroundings. An island, about 4 m in depth, formed of rhizomes, peat and roots, floats in the centre. The existence of this island was first noted in the 1st century BCE by the Latin writer Marcus Terentius Varro and later by Pliny the Elder. With a round, conical shape, about 30m in diameter, the "Rota” (“Wheel” as it is known) moves around the lake, shifted by the wind or rising water levels from the streams.
