The Monastery of St. Benedict, or Sanctuary of the Sacro Speco (Holy Cave), is an ancient monastery built along the rockface of Mount Taleo, near Subiaco (province of Rome). For almost 1,000 years, the Sanctuary of the Sacro Speco has preserved the cave where a very young St. Benedict lived as an anchorite hermit for three years.
Today the Monastery has two churches and a multitude of small chapels that follow the shape of the rockface. The famous cave is located in the lower church.
The numerous frescoes decorating the structure include the oldest known portrait of St. Francis of Assisi, who came to Subiaco in pilgrimage in 1223. The ancient refectory houses a 14th century fresco of The Last Supper, which has recently been restored to its original splendour.
