The Abbey of Saints Cyricus and Julitta is located between via Salaria and the Velino river in Micigliano (province of Rieti). The monastery appears to have been established by the Benedictine order in the first half of the 10th century and today, despite various restauration interventions, still has a Romanesque appearance.
In some ways, the complex recalls its original fortified structure: surrounded by a quadrangular wall, it has an imposing bell tower at its centre which was also used as a lookout, as demonstrated by the arrow slits in the south-eastern wall that face the entrance gate. The bell tower is the most significant part of the complex, two of its facades are divided into three parts by two horizontal cornices and its walls conserve the embedded sculptures of a bishop (or abbot) with mitre and crozier, and a lion’s head.
The abbey and its outbuildings stand in a garden, surrounded by countryside.
