The Abbey of San Salvatore Maggiore in Concerviano (province of Rieti) is a significant example of medieval and Benedictine history. It stands on the plain of Letenano, between the Salto and Turano river valleys, and has an imposing quadrangular structure that encloses an inner courtyard. The complex includes a simple, single-naved church with side chapels and raised presbytery, an imposing bell tower and three monastery buildings gathered on a rectangular courtyard.
Dating to different eras and differing architecturally, the three buildings have had various roles over time. The oldest block, the east wing annexed to the church, hosted communal spaces such as the refectory, chapterhouse, kitchens and dormitory areas, which are now lost. The north wing, created to provide a defensive structure offering storage and shelter, became a residence during the Renaissance. The west wing was the administrative and ceremonial centre, with curia and tribunal, while the most recent block, added when the building was no longer a monastery, was intended for used as a chapel and dormitory for seminary students.
