Piazza della Santissima Annunziata in Florence which takes its name from the basilica that stands on it, was designed by Brunelleschi in 1419 who incorporated a clever use of proportion.
Porticoes on three sides surround the central statue of Ferdinand I de’ Medici on horseback made by Giambologna and Pietro Tacca.
The present-day structure of the Church of the Holy Annunciation, was built in the 1400s by Michelozzo and Leon Battista Alberti, and financed by the Medici dynasty. Its elegant atrium stands out amidst the buildings on the square.
Other historic buildings on the square include: the Foundlings Hospital with a portico by Brunelleschi, to the right of the entrance; Palazzo Grifoni designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati in 1563, situated to the left of the entrance coming from the Duomo; the portico of the Brotherhood of the Servants of Mary, built between 1516 and 1525 adjacent to Palazzo Grifoni; and the 16th century Palazzo Budini Gattai.
