Cortino del Castello di Fratta – Fossalta di Portogruaro

Description

Cortino di Fratta, built for agricultural purposes and today a museum, is located in Fratta, in the municipality of Fossalta di Portogruaro (Verona).
This area is also the location of the castle where Carlo Altoviti, protagonist of the novel Confessioni di un Italiano, spent his youth. Restoration and environmental work uncovered traces of the novel’s author, Ippolito Nievo, and his work. Although the castle no longer exists, the archaeological exploration resulted in the numerous artefacts that are conserved today at the Cortino di Fratta alongside Nievo’s collection of books, documents and objects.
Today the cortino houses a museum dedicated to the writer. Recovery work on the site included the creation of a park, an open-air theatre and the garden of Mars and Flora, which features tree and flower species present in the territory during the Middle Ages. Archaeological and archival work lead to the discovery of trees and planted hedges along what are presumed to be the walls of the ancient castle.
