The Basilica Palladiana in piazza dei Signori is one of the most iconic public buildings in Vicenza. The Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio dubbed it the “Basilica”, using the Ancient Roman meaning of the word which indicated a key place in politics or business. Palladio added a white marble loggia with Venetian windows to the medieval Palazzo della Ragione.
Originally the headquarters for the magistrature of Vicenza, the Basilica today has three exhibition spaces, used mainly for architectural and art displays. The ground floor houses the ancient workshops, the first floor a large reception room surrounded by the loggia while the upper floor leads to the panoramic terrace. The archaeological area of Corte dei Bissari, which encapsulates the urban history of the city, is found in the basement of the Basilica.
The Basilica Palladiana has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.
