The Monumental Cemetery in Forlì is one of the main cemetery architecture of Romagna for its austere majesty.
Since 1807, after the promulgation of the Napoleonic edict of Saint Cloud (1804), Forlì activated the construction of a city cemetery, enlarged in 1818 by Ruffillo Righini. In 1863 the structure was rebuilt and expanded again.
White marbles and delicate stuccos decorate the wide arches surrounding the impressive Pantheon. There are examples of more than one century of art: from the Neoclassical statues to the realistic and the flowery descriptivist styles. Famous artists enriched its structure. Antonio Canova sculpted the Missirini bas-relief that is nowadays kept in the local picture-gallery. In the cemetery there are the impressive monuments sculpted by Lombardini di Santarcangelo, a valuable apostle of Canova.
