Piazza del Duomo in Trento has been called one of the most beautiful squares in the world. It is, undoubtedly, one of the most unusual and colourful. It has also been known as piazza Grande, piazza Comune, piazza Italiana, piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, piazza Cesare Battisti.
The surprising scenic effect it provides is the perfect accompaniment to the colour of the buildings lining it, their impulsive architectural line enhanced by three sequences of 15th-16th century porticoes.
The square is the heart of the historic centre and the setting for the Alpine city’s civic and religious life. In terms of urban layout, it was not centralized with the developing city walls because of historical events that elevated the Christian cemetery building outside porta Veronese (Roman in origin) to the status of cathedral.
