The life and tortuous career of Roberto Baggio encapsulated in 90 minutes, the length of a football match. Letizia Lamartire’s film focusses on his beginnings, his successes, the difficult relationships with some of his coaches and with his family, his love-hate bond with his fans. Scenes alternate between moments on and off the pitch, with glimpses of the cities where he lived and played and the natural landscapes that surrounded him. Thanks to green screen technology, the Olindo Galli Stadium in Tivoli was transformed into various named grounds, in Italy and abroad, also shot by a drone in 3D. One match in particular marked Baggio’s career, the 1994 World Cup Finals where Italy played Brazil at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena (USA), although the tunnel entrance is actually Rome’s Olympic Stadium. The Hotel Sheraton in the EUR neighbourhood was used for the hotel that hosted the Azzurriduring the 1994 world cup.
The check-ups for his knee injury were shot at Villa Regina Casa di Cura in Arco, Trentino. The entire Trento area played an important role in the film: the Church of St. Joseph of Trento football pitch served as Caldogno in the Vicenza area where Baggio the player had his “baptism”; the scenes of his father hunting were shot at lake Santo (one of the two Lamar lakes) in the municipality of Vallelaghi; those of his Buddhist practice; the family home (a private residence with original 1980s furnishings); and the hanger when the child Roberto attempts to kick a ball are also in the same territory.
An important moment in the career of Il Divin Codino’s (lit. the Divine Ponytail) took place in Florence: during his time with the “Viola” team, Baggio met a record shop owner who introduced him to Buddhism: shooting also took place in a historic city shop “Contempo Records” and a private residence on via Sant’Egidio with a panoramic view over the city, transformed for the occasion into the footballer’s home in Florence.
