Every morning Lucia wakes early to take her goats to pasture amidst the grass and rocks of the island that represents her world, whose borders are delineated by the swathe of turquoise that surrounds it.
Although the Capri of the early 1900s no longer exists, Martone wanted to recreate the look of that era by using locations on the island which still preserve uncontaminated nature such as Orrico and Monte Solaro. He later headed to the Cilento area and its caves, including Camerota (and its Grotta Azzurra), San Mauro and San Severino for the countryside settings. The exterior for the commune that so fascinates Lucia can be found in San Severino di Centola (SA), a medieval borgo perched on a spur of rock similar to Capri.
Another location used for the film was Gaeta (LT), near the Pozzo del Diavolo, and out at sea on board the sailing boat, Signora del Vento, transformed for the occasion into the boat taking the migrants to America.

The local people are curious about the commune, especially Lucia, a young goatherd who is repressed by her patriarchal family, and Carlo, the village’s young doctor.
