The film tells the story, through its three protagonists, of some of the events of the Italian Renaissance, starting with the revolutionary uprisings in Cilento, and it does so by setting the story in the places where these events really took place.
One of the main sets was created in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park in the province of Salerno. More specifically, the story was shot in Roscigno Vecchia, Pollica, Castellabate, Camerota and Palinuro.
In the second episode, after the disastrous experience of the Roman Republic, Domenico is arrested and taken, with other political prisoners, to the Irpinian prison of Montefusco: for the prison settings, Bovino Castle and the Norman-Angevin Deliceto Castle were used (both are located in the province of Foggia).
Most of the film was shot in Piedmont, in Turin, Saluzzo, Savigliano (TO) and the area surrounding Pinerolo, including most of the scenes set in France and England.
The choice of Castellabate (SA) as a location for the film is significant. The town is located a stone’s throw from Sapri, where the uprising initiated by Carlo Pisacane was quashed in blood. Here, filming took place in particular under the “Le Gatte” covered walkway of Santa Maria di Castellabate, which overlooks a small port.
Palinuro is another picturesque town that was used for filming: here you can see the sea, the river, vegetation and rocks. Whilst the coast of Acciaroli is where boats are boarded, the Natural Arch of Palinuro, near the mouth of the River Mingardo, provides the backdrop for the landing scenes. Passing by the Devil’s Mouth, a cliff on which the Medieval town of San Severino sits, in the fourth episode Domenico and Saverio cross the Mingardo on horseback, to join the Garibaldians who will soon land there. The pair seek shelter on the high planes of Palinuro.

A film structured in four chapters: Le scelte (lit. Choices), Domenico, Angelo and L’alba della nazione (lit. The Dawn of the Nation), set during the Risorgimento. Following the Bourbon repression of political movements of 1828, three young people from Cilento: Salvatore, Domenico and Angelo, join Giuseppe Mazzini’s Giovine Italia movement.
