Situated on a hill, in a panoramic position over the entire Val di Non, 16th-century Thun Castle is surrounded by a complex system of fortifications comprising towers, walls, bastions, walkways and a moat.
From the mid-1200s to the late-1800s, it was the cradle, fortress and splendid residence of one of the most powerful and ancient families in Trentino. The Thun residence was permanently inhabited and carefully looked after until the death of count Zdenko Franz Thun Hohenstein (of the Bohemian Teschen line) on July 30, 1982. Over the centuries, the castle changed appearance in accordance with contemporary tastes, its equipment and furnishings renewed, becoming a treasure chest of archive documents with a voluminous library.
The upper floor features the stuba magna which houses a fresco cycle of 24 scenes depicting the wars of independence and religion of the Netherlands. The wooden coffered ceiling with floral decorations is also worthy of note.
