Castel Beseno dominates the Adige Valley from the top of a hill between Rovereto and Trento. Today it hosts temporary exhibitions, cultural and pageantry events which use the vast “campo dei tornei”, now a well-tended garden, as an exceptional setting. This marks a break with the past when it was a theatre for historic clashes: from struggles against Verona in the 12th and 13th century, to the 1487 battle between Trento and Venice; armed battles between French revolutionaries and Austrians; and two world wars.
The large walls that characterize Castel Beseno date to the 1500s. The gate had a drawbridge and there are three cannons in the entrance courtyard. To one side are the clock tower and granary. Behind the central part of the castle is the residence of the castellans. The original feudal complex comprised three turreted buildings located at the two rising ends of the small hill. The third comprised the Bishop’s House and the palazzo nuovo.
