Famous for its romantic legends and the lazy holidays of a bishop's court, Toblino Castle is a rare example of lake fortification in Trentino.
The original nucleus of Castel Toblino dates to 201 C.E., when a small temple dedicated to the spirits stood on the rocky spur. Its original religious nature was quickly replaced by a military-strategic function. The lords of Toblino were ousted in the 13th century by the lords of Campo, of Castle Campo in Giudicaria.
The castle was subsequently confiscated by the Church of Trento (1459) and Cardinal Bernardo Clesio had it rebuilt (1536-37) to the taste of Renaissance castle residences. The predominant 16th-century elements are due to its subsequent transformation (portico and courtyard loggia, round arches). Today the western wall (3m thick) and the turret to the north-west of the current perimeter are identifiable as part of the medieval layout. The cylindrical tower, almost the emblem of the castle, rises to a height of 20m, which means it is considered a true keep, reinforcing the boundary that closed the top of the fortified rock.
