Drena Castle (Trento) was built in the 12th century, in a predominantly Romanesque style to which Gothic and 16th century elements were later added. It is located on a peak from where it dominates the deep gorge of the Sallagoni river, a place of strategic importance because it offered control of river traffic and could block the only usable pass. A burial area surrounded the first masonry building on the site, later transformed into a castle when the area was feudalized.
The castle was attacked several times during the years and is today a partial ruin, although some rooms are still used for exhibitions and events. The crenelated tower offers an observation point of the Marocche, an expanse of land covered with 187 million cubic metres of boulders created by an unusual glacial phenomenon.
