One of the most visited beach towns on the Tyrrhenian coast, Forte dei Marmi grew up around a wharf built at the end of the 19th century to load boats with marble from the Apuan Alps and a fortress built on the orders of Leopold I in 1788, which stands in the centre of Piazza Garibaldi. Over the last hundred years, Forte Dei Marmi has become a tourist destination known and loved all over the world and is characterised by its splendid villas hidden and protected by green pine groves, the elegance of its beach resorts, its small fashion boutiques and the workshops of famous designers that line its main streets.
