The medieval borgo of Peccioli is located 30 km from Volterra where it dominates the Valdera area from a hill covered with vineyards. It conserves examples of 12th century architecture such as the Pieve di San Verano, with a 42m high bell tower by Bellincioni, the chapel of Peccioli and Palazzo Pretorio. Today the palazzo is part of the museum system which includes the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Sacred art and the bell tower.
The range of small hamlet on the hills include: Fabbrica with a Romanesque pieve; Libbiano with astronomical observatory; Montelopio and Legoli, with a tabernacle by Benozzo Gozzoli in the Chapel of Santa Caterina; Ghizzano, a village embellished with permanent contemporary works by international artists and a sound garden.
Over the past two decades, Peccioli has become a multi-site open-air, contemporary art museum, featuring site-specific works spread out across the town.
