The Castello dell'Abbadia which rises near Canino (VT), in Vulci, has a polygonal layout with five towers. Dating to the 13th century, it was built in a strategic position to protect an Etruscan-Roman bridge, known as the Rainbow Bridge or Devil’s Bridge, on the edge of a limestone rocky spur that dominates the Fiora River which begins in Monte Amiata on the boundary of Lazio and Tuscany. The Benedictine Abbey connected to the Castle was dedicated to San Mamiliano, who was particularly venerated in the Maremma area. Mentioned in the 9th century, it was destroyed by the Saracens in 964 and later rebuilt. Over time, the castle has belonged to the Farnese family, to Luciano Bonaparte and to the Torlonia family and today houses the Archaeological Museum of Vulci.
