Sannicandro, 14km from Bari, is surrounded by fields of Mediterranean fruits, sweet figs and almond groves. The area is more famous, however, for the sweet olive which is the focus of an annual festivity.
The imposing Norman Castle overlooks the medieval part of the village and is ringed by a road that traces the path of the ancient moat. Six of its eight fortification towers are still standing today along with two magnificent gates, an example of Norman-Swabian architecture, where the holes for the drawbridge chains are clearly visible as is the coat of arms of the Grimaldi princes.
