The pyramids of Segonzano (Trento) are naturally occurring shapes that, geologically speaking, are a very recent in origin: formed around 50,000 years ago, they are the result of water erosion by the waterways flowing through a moraine deposit left by the effects of Würm glaciation.
They are formed of a conglomerate of earth and small pebbles of various origins, sufficiently consolidated to maintain a certain consistency but still susceptible to erosion caused by rainwater. The moraine deposit was covered by a landslide of large porphyry boulders, which caused the creation of the pyramids: the ground beneath the boulders is more compact and protected from rainwater erosion.
