The Pale di San Martino, the largest and best-known mountain group in the Dolomites, is distributed across the provinces of Trento and Belluno. The Trentino part is located within the Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino natural park. Some peaks exceed 3,000 m.: the highest being Cima Vezzana (3,192 m) and Cimon della Pala (3,184 m).
The mountains are formed of Dolomite, a sedimentary rock composed of double carbonate of calcium and magnesium. The Pale shine in the sunset, like all the Dolomites, taking on a particular shade of pink/orange which offers a picture-perfect landscape. At the foot of the mountains are the famous towns of Fiera di Primiero and San Martino di Castrozza.
Some of the Dolomites’ most famous vie ferrate are located in the range, including the Via Ferrata Bolver-Lugli at Cimon della Pala. There are also many alpine refuges, including Pedrotti alla Rosetta, Velo della Madonna, Pradidali and Capanna Cervino.
The lunar plateau and wild peaks have inspired numerous writers such as Dino Buzzati.
