Sass Pordoi is a mountain in the Dolomite range, the southern-most of the Sella group, whose peak features a wide plateau that slopes towards northwest. It has three steep rock faces that rise high over val Lastìes, pian de Schiavanèis and the Pordoi pass.
While mt. Marmolada is considered the queen of the Dolomites, Sasso Pordoi is known as the terrace of the Dolomites because of its unusual shape. The south face drops 800m, with a slope of over 80%. On the north face, however, the slope is more gradual.
The mountain can be reached by the Pordoi pass cable car, built to replace one from the early 19th century, or by path 627 which follows a gravel valley to the Forcella refuge and then up to the peak. The ancient via Maria is the most famous of the many paths through the rocks to the peak; it was created by the Devil of the Dolomirtes, the Alpine guide Tita Piaz in the 1930s.
Many important features of Trentino’s history are linked to Pordoi: WWI battles, as the ossario Tedesco bears witness today; Maria Piaz, a pioneer of tourism in Val di Fassa and sister to Tita Piaz; and the Giro d’Italia, memorialised in the monument to Fausto Coppi.
