Parco Savello, better known as the Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Garden), is a city park of about 7,800 m² located on the Aventine hill in Rome. It stands on the site of an ancient fortress that belonged to the Favelli family, dating to the 13th century, and is surrounded by medieval walls that are interrupted on the western side to create a long terrace with a sweeping view of the river Tiber, from the temples of the Forum Boarium and the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin over to the Janiculum hill and the imposing outline of the dome of St. Peter’s.
The garden was designed in 1932 by Raffaele de Vico in order to create a new belvedere or viewpoint for the city, to add to those on the Pincian and Janiculum hills. De Vico designed a rigidly symmetrical layout for the garden, with an avenue in the centre that divides the terrace into two large areas. The orange trees were planted in memory of St. Dominic who founded a convent in the area in the 13th century: through a hole in the wall the orange tree where he preached can be seen in the cloister of the Church of Santa Sabina.
