The Castle del Malconsiglio in Miglionico (MT) is famous as the site of the 1485 Conspiracy of the Barons against King Ferdinand I of Naples. It is shaped like a parallelogram, flanked by seven towers: the most ancient are square, some, at the top of the building, are circular and there are two double towers. The upper floor holds the androceo and gineceo (male and female dining areas), the salon del Malconsiglio where the plot took place and the Star Room (also known as the Spirits Room) with a starshaped ceiling and caskets which were used to guard precious documents and treasures.
The castle rises on a hill outside the medieval centre between the Basento and Bradano rivers, at 461m above sea level. The path leading to the castle is not particularly taxing and the town centre, with its parking area, is easily reached by car.
