The Castle of Grottole (MT) stands on a hill detached from the rest of the village, in a place formerly called Contrada della Motta and its construction dates back to 604 a.C., by the Longobardi of Benevento. The original structure consisted of 13 sopranos rooms, 6 basements, a stable and a cellar. Prisons, instead, were located at the beginning of "Salita Castello", on the right side, later used as dwellings. The castle suffered a substantial feudal succession and was owned over time by various and illustrious families of the Kingdom of Naples. It is also said that around 1750 Pietrantonio Sanseverino, prince of Chiaromonte and lord of Grottole, adapted as theater a large room on the first floor, and the most famous wanderers companies performed here. An ancient legend is linked to this building: looking at the colossal tower, and precisely the window towards the town, it is easy to see the blond figure of Abufina, the most beautiful and the unluckiest girl ever lived in Grottole, who will tell you of her love on moonlit nights and in the spring months.
