The Castle of San Basilio is located in the hamlet of Marconia in the municipality of Pisticci (MT). From its elevated position surrounded by vegetation, it enjoys a privileged view across the entire Gulf of Taranto.
The original structure included a fortified masseria (farmhouse) from the 7th century which later became a Norman castle with the addition of the central tower. The large complex is structured around a central courtyard offering access to the main buildings which house the refectory, the kitchens, the dormitory, archive, library, a 18th century chapel and the chapter house. The imposing square tower that dates to the early 11th century is also in the courtyard.
The external clearing outside the castle, recently restructured with the addition of a mosaic in local stone, leads beneath a centuries-old arch to the castle entrance. Annexed to the castle are gardens and a valley of fruit trees.
