The imposing medieval Castle of Muro Lucano (PZ) today is the result of a range of architectural modifications applied during its history. Built in the 9th century by the Lombards as a border fortress, it was home to numerous sovereigns and nobles and the site of the 1382 assassination of Queen Joanna I of Naples commissioned by Carlo di Gravina.
Two towers, from different eras, rise from the structure: the older, known as the torrione, is built of limestone and topped with a terrace while the more recent has a circular shape, bounded by arches. A twisting path links the castle to the ancient neighbourhood of Borgo Pianello which rose up in the area below, beneath the crest of the hill.
